The Barcolana is the most famous and popular international sailing regatta in Italy, a unique event that attracts boats and enthusiasts from all over the world. A true celebration of the sea, capable of involving both participants and spectators.
Born in 1969 thanks to the initiative of the Barcola and Grignano Sailing Society, the Barcolana is held every year in the suggestive Gulf of Trieste. For the people of Trieste it is much more than a competition: it is a deep-rooted tradition and a symbol of city pride.
The event extends over an entire week, culminating in the great regatta which takes place on the second Sunday of October. A spectacular moment in which hundreds of boats sail on the sea, offering an unforgettable backdrop for all spectators.

Regatta route
The regatta route is a quadrilateral with fixed vertices located in the suggestive Gulf of Trieste, for a total length of 13 nautical miles. The start is scheduled at 10.30 am, with the starting line located between Barcola and Miramare.
The first leg involves a navigation of 4.3 miles at 210 degrees, up to Buoy 1. From here, a short passage of 0.90 miles at 332 degrees leads to Buoy 2.
Continuing, the route leads to Buoy 3, located off the coast of Miramare Castle, after a 4 mile stretch. The crews then return to Barcola, coasting for 2.3 miles.
The final phase begins off the Faro della Vittoria, with a 160 degree navigation towards the Porto Vecchio Dam. The finish line, located in front of the majestic Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, marks the finish line of the regatta.
