The Barcolana is the most well-known and popular international sailing regatta in Italy, with boats from all over the world… a celebration of the sea for everyone, participants and spectators!
Born in 1969 on the initiative of the Sailing Society of Barcola and Grignano, the Barcolana which is held every year in the Gulf of Trieste, is a great celebration which has become an indissoluble tradition for the people of Trieste.
The festival lasts a week, but the heart of the whole event is in the second week of October when the regatta is held on Sunday… It’s impossible not to admire the many boats sailing in the sea!
On those days Trieste dresses up and hosts events, music and shows throughout the week that make it even more alive!

Triestina atmosphere during the Barcolana….from sea to land.
PATH.
It is a quadrilateral with fixed vertices positioned in the Gulf of Trieste, with a total length of 13 nautical miles. The departure is set at 10.30 am and the line is positioned between Barcola and Miramare; proceed for 210 degrees, for 4.3 nautical miles, until reaching the first buoy, then follows a disengagement of 0.90 miles, for 332 degrees. From Boa 2 to Boa 3, off the coast of Miramare Castle, you sail for 4 miles, then return towards Barcola, along the coast, for 2.3 miles. The final phase of the regatta begins off the coast of the Vittoria Lighthouse, which leads the crews to the finish line: they sail for 160 degrees until reaching the Porto Vecchio Dam, where, in front of Piazza dell’Unità, the arrival of the regatta.
